Episode #125: Jennie E. Barr - Murdered (1977)

Jennie E. Barr was a 78-year-old widow, a resident of Tremont, PA, who was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary, The Woman's Club, and was even helping with the local bloodmobile. She had three best friends who kept in touch daily, if not hourly. No one had an unkind thing to say about Jennie. So how does a well-respected woman, who lived a life of giving back to others, get murdered? And what could be the motive?

Birth: 10/08/1898 – Death: 03/30/1977

Ethnicity:  Caucasian         Sex: Female

Hometown: Tremont, PA - Schuylkill County


Crime Scene: Found in the den of her Tremont home at 20 N. Crescent St. Nothing was missing, ruling out burglary.


Injury Description: Sexual assault and strangulation

Suspect Description: A suspect was arrested in February 1981 and reportedly confessed, eventually going to trial. In June of 1981 24-year-old William J. Harner of Tremont was acquitted after four hours of deliberation.


Additional Information: Jennie's murder was the first of four that occurred in the Lykens Valley area in less than three years. All victims were elderly widows.
